It is my job to provide exceptional, one-of-a-kind garden designs for my clients. Using my knowledge, expertise, and imagination, I help you get what you want and need from your plot of land in a way that reflects who you are. The purpose of the design is to communicate on paper the details that will become your uniquely individual garden. Whether you live on a small town-sized lot or on a rolling country estate the same design principles apply and the process generally proceeds as follows:

Proposal Phase:
We will get together to discuss the scope of the project and walk the property. I use the information gathered to create a design proposal; it defines the work that I will produce for you and includes an estimated “not to exceed” cost for my services.

Site Analysis:
Upon acceptance of the design proposal I arrange to collect site data and perform a site analysis. The site analysis is a visual assessment which looks at the opportunities and constraints of each site including views, topography, existing plants, sun and water patterns to name a few. Using these observations along with your wish list I begin to develop concepts.

Concept Design:
Conceptual plans are an exploration of possible solutions to the design problem. I use “broad brush strokes” to describe the character of the garden spaces and the layout of defined uses and functional elements. Together we explore various expressions of site layout, feeling, and flow so that you can see which ideas really work for you.

Final Plan Development:
After we meet to review the concepts it generally becomes clear which ideas will be pursued in detail. I then proceed with the creation of the final or Master Plan. The Master Plan is a scaled drawing which defines the layout, size, and materials of all structural elements and the name, size, location, and quantity of all plants. Your individualized design proposal will list what is to be included on the final plan. In some cases additional construction plans may be needed for out-buildings, pergolas, arbors, etc.; these are generally contracted seperately and may require the input of an independent architect or engineer.

Site Supervision:
I will work with contractors of your choosing or am happy to recommend contractors that I know and trust; I receive no compensation for doing so. I work as your representative and can be available on an hourly basis for pre-construction meetings and on-site guidance as needed to convey the design intent.
